Changes to Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC)
Odevixibat (200 mcg capsule; 400 mcg capsule; 600 mcg capsule; 1.2 mg capsule) (Bylvay®) is now listed on the PBS for the treatment of PFIC.
Chronic Pouchitis
Further to the recent changes made to the Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis programs, from 1 January 2026 vedolizumab (300mg injection vial) (Entyvio®) for the treatment of moderate to severe chronic pouchitis can be requested and approved using the Online PBS Authorities system (the system).
This change will make it easier to request PBS authority approval for vedolizumab from Services Australia. You will no longer need to submit written authority applications, instead you will be able to use the system to apply for authority approval and provide evidence digitally.
To assist you and your members to get started and become more familiar using the system we have provided the item codes below. This information is accurate as at 1 January 2026, however is subject to change as the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing makes changes to the PBS Schedule.

Changes to the acute lymphoblastic leukaemia program
There will be a change to the way health professionals can apply for dasatinib (20 mg tablet; 50 mg tablet; 70 mg tablet; 100 mg tablet) to treat patients with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia using the Online PBS Authorities system.
Health professionals are required to include a copy of the pathology report when submitting initial authority applications for approval via the system. This evidentiary addition may delay the assessment response.

Changes to the PBS listing for treatment of Crohn's disease.
Changes are coming to enable digital self-service for all severe Crohn’s disease (for patients 18 years and older) and fistulising Crohn’s disease PBS Authorities.
From 1 December 2025, you will be able to use the Online PBS Authorities system to request PBS Authority approvals for adalimumab, infliximab, upadacitinib, ustekinumab and vedolizumab. Services Australia has also provided the item code “cheat sheet” for Chron’s disease.
These details are accurate as at 1 November 2025, however, are subject to change as the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing makes changes to the PBS Schedule.

Services Australia has provided important information about Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme listings for the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis.
From 1 October, you will be able to use the online PBS Authorities system to request approvals.

Changes to the PBS listing for treatment of paediatric Crohn’s disease.
Services Australia has provided important information about changes to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme listings for the treatment of paediatric Crohn’s disease.
Adalimumab and infiximad for the treatment of paediatric Crohn's disease can now be requested and approved using the online PBS Authorities system.

Changes to severe chronic plaque psoriasis program
Adalimumab, bimekizumab, etanercept, guselkumab, infliximab, ixekizumab, risankizuman, secukinumab, tildrakizumab and ustekinumab for the treatment of severe chronic plaque psoriasis can now be requested and approved using the online PBS Authorities system.
These changes will make it easier for you to request authority for approval of these medicines from Services Australia. You will no longer need to submit written authority applications, details of the proposed prescriptions and test results for certain medicines and treatment phases. Instead, you will be able to use the system to apply for authority and provide evidence digitally.
It is recommended you document your patient's baseline values and previous treatment failures in their records as you may need to provide previously supplied information in your application to demonstrate patient eligibility for change, recommencement and continuing treatments.

Changes to severe psoriatic arthritis program
You will no longer need to submit written authority applications, details of the proposed prescriptions and test results for certain medicines and treatment phases. Instead, you will be able to use the system to apply for authority approval and provide evidence digitally.
It is recommended you document your patient's baseline values and previous treatment failures in their records as you may need to provide previously supplied information in your application to demonstrate patient eligibility for change, recommencement and continuing treatments.

Health Professional Online Service (HPOS) form upload
When submitting a PBS or RPBS authority application via the HPOS form upload, it is important that you select the correct Form Category and Form Type.
Selecting the appropriate Form Category and Form Type will ensure your application is sent to the correct agency, allowing for a smoother assessment process avoiding any unecessary delays.

Planned changes to severe psoriatic arthritis program
Changes are coming to enable digital self-service for all severe psoriatic arthritis PBS Authorities. From 1 July 2025, you will be able to use the Online PBS Authorities system to request PBS Authority approvals for adalumumab, bimekizumab, certolizumab pegol, etanercept, golimumab, guselkumab, infliximab, ixekizumab, risankizumab, secukinumab, tofacitinib, upadacitinib and ustekinumab.
Summary of changes from 1 July 2025:
Initial treatment
Authority applications can be made digitally using the Online PBS Authorities system or in writing.
Tip: Document your patient's baseline values in their medical records, as these may be needed for future applications.
Initial grandfather (for bimekizumab or risankizumab only)
Authority applications can be made digitally using the Online PBS Authorities system or in writing.

Change/recommencement

Changes when requesting PBS authority approval for stimulants
Services Australia has provided the below update regarding recent changes when requesting PBS authority approval for stimulants.
Due to an amendment to the PBS listing for stimulants from 1 June 2025 to include nurse practitioners as eligible prescribers where they are continuing treatment initiate by a medical practitioner, the questions and answers asked when seeking a Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme (PBS) authority approval for the stimulants have changes.
Services Australia is required to ensure the patient meets all aspects of the restriction. This includes confirming the type of health practitioner who is treating the patient.
Services Australia and the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing have been working together to increase the number of PBS medicines that can be requested and approved for treatment using stimulants.
Using the system makes it easier for you to request authority approval for these medicines from Services Australia. You no longer need to call to request authority approval. Instead, you will be able to use the system to apply for authority approval and provide evidence digitally.
Important information
PBS Authorities items criteria
Under the PBS, medicine are made available based on recommendations form the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC). Patients must meet the set criteria to be eligible for PBS-subsidised medicines. Services Australia are unable to provide approval for an Authority Required medication where a patient does not meet the criteria established by PBAC.

It's important to ensure you are providing accurate and up to date information when completing an authority application. Failure to do so may result in your authority request being rejected.
